Microsoft to stop providing detailed Windows Phone update information

Windows PhoneMicrosoft today announced a change to the way it will communicate future Windows Phone updates. It will essentially stop providing detailed Windows Phone update information on its Where’s my phone update? page. As Eric Hautala, General Manager, Customer Experience Engineering, explains:

In the months ahead, we’ll continue to send out firmware and maintenance updates as needed. These will be available across the globe—although not everybody will receive or require them. It depends on your country, carrier, and phone model. But remember that you’ll never have to guess when a Windows Phone update is waiting: Just watch for the pop up notification on your device.

Not only will users lose visibility to exactly what can be found in an update but the lack of information will also make it more difficult for them to know when carriers are holding back updates. I expect that there will be an outcry from the Windows Phone community.

Microsoft’s latest Windows Phone update, build 8107, will be the last one to offer a full outline of what is included.
