Microsoft developer evangelist Nuno Silva today cleared up some statements he made during a recent interview. During an interview, he said what every Windows Phone user today wants to hear; that Microsoft would upgrade all existing devices to the next major version. The comments contradicted earlier rumours. Unfortunately, it was also incorrect.
Silva has now clarified that he confused applications with devices.
The point I was attempting to make was simply that existing Windows Phone applications will run on the next version of Windows Phone. This is the same guidance that Microsoft shared late last year.
I mistakenly confused app compatibility with phone updateability [sic], which caused the rumors we saw yesterday. I did not intend to give the impression I was offering new guidance on any products under development or their upgradeability [sic].
With Apollo widely expected to be able to support multi-core processors and higher resolution displays, it remains to be seen if current devices will be able to meet the higher requirements. For its part, Microsoft has yet to confirm or deny that existing devices will be upgradeable to Windows Phone 8.
