LG today unveiled a 5-inch full HD LCD panel intended for smartphones. Running at a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, it offers full HD at the same resolution as many of today’s TVs and monitors. The LG display also packs 440 pixels per inch (PPI) beating out both the Apple iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S III which have smaller displays.
“As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5-inch Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market,” said Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. “With the world’s highest resolution smartphone display, LG Display continues to remain a step ahead in developing the most innovative in display technology products.”
LG’s 5-inch panel uses LG Display’s Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS) technology. It promises accurate colours, wide viewing angles, rapid response when touched, and good visibility when outdoors.
LG expects to release its 5-inch full HD LCD panel in the second half of the year. There is no word yet on which future smartphone(s) will carry the panel.
