Was it really five years ago today that Google Android was first launched? On November 5th 2007, the Open Handset Alliance unveiled Android. It took nearly another year for the first Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G1, to be released. Android has come a long way in those few short years.
Here are a few statistics to illustrate Android’s success:
- Some 500 million Android devices have now been activated.
- At least 600 unique hardware devices running Android have been released.
- In early September, Google was seeing 1.3 million Android activations a day.
- Google’s first Nexus tablet is nearing sales of 1 million units a month.
- Android accounted for 75% of smartphones shipped in Q3 2012.
- Android is now on its fourth major version, Jelly Bean.
