Google Play quietly passed the 15 billion app download milestone “a few weeks ago.” A Google spokesperson confirmed the achievement to TechCrunch yesterday.
Google Play topped the 10 billion download mark back in December when still known as the Google Market. At the time, it was seeing about a billion downloads a month. If it reached its latest milestone weeks ago, it must be seeing an even higher monthly download rate now.
Despite the impressive results, Google Play is still not a major money maker for Google. It projected last year that it would make US$14.5 million in app sales in 2011 and US$35.9 million in 2012.
Apple recently celebrated 25 billion App Store downloads. It also has more apps, some 600,000, in its catalog than Google Play’s 500,000.
