Andy Rubin, SVP of Mobile at Google, yesterday revealed via Twitter that Google is now activating 900,000 Android devices per day. He also denied rumours that he was about to leave Google:
No plans to leave Google. Oh, and just for meme completeness — there are over 900,000 android devices activated each day 🙂 @Scobleizer
Rumours that Rubin would leave Google started yesterday after a Google+ update by Robert Scoble indicated he was leaving to head up a startup called CloudCar. Rubin later added via Google+ that “Cloudcar are a group of friends who I give free office space to in my incubator in Los Altos.”
The last time Rubin announced activation rates was back in February when they stood at 850,000 per day. Back in December 2011, that number stood at 700,000, illustrating how quickly Google Android devices are being scooped up by consumers. IDC expects that it will end 2012 with a 61% market share of the worldwide mobile phone market.
