Rumours of a Google branded tablet made by ASUS continue to gather steam. On the heels of a report last week, Digitimes is now reporting that Google and ASUS could unveil a co-branded tablet as early as May. It could also be the first tablet to use the just announced Google Play Store.
The report adds that Google chose to partner with ASUS because of its ODM capabilities and product quality. Discussions had been held with HTC and Acer as well. The former was apparently ruled out as it wanted to direct development and was unwilling to develop a low-cost tablet while the latter lacked the necessary R&D capabilities to support the project.
The Google-ASUS tablet is set to be priced in the US$199 to US$249 range. No specifications have been revealed yet but the 7-inch ASUS MeMo tablets unveiled at CES 2012 give us a hint of what the two companies could have in mind.
