ASUS to manufacture upcoming Google Nexus tablet?

Google AndroidNone other than the company’s chairman, Eric Schmidt, has indicated that Google is working on a Nexus tablet. Since then, rumours have been floating about what this “Google Nexus tablet” could look like. Most suggest a 7-inch tablet priced around the US$199 mark. New details now suggest that those rumours have not been far off the mark.

Citing “two different industry sources,” AndroidandMe reports that Google may partner with ASUS to manufacture its first Google-branded tablet. Google apparently approached ASUS after the latter announced the MeMo 370T tablet at CES 2012. Selling for a promised US$249, it will come with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, Android 4.0, and a 7-inch WXGA display.

Google has allegedly asked ASUS to develop a model that would come in at the US$199 price point. Considering that ASUS also showed off the lower-spec MeMo ME171 at CES 2012, it should not have too much trouble meeting Google’s demands. Google may have also asked ASUS to complement the 7-inch model with a 10-inch model that would sell in the US$299 range.

With rumours of production starting in April, Google could unveil its first tablet as early as this spring or summer. Perhaps in time for Google I/O 2012?
