Nearly 9 months after being released Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has now made it onto just over 10% of all Android devices. The latest distribution numbers from Android Developers show that Android 4.0.x now accounts for 10.9% of Android devices that have accessed Google Play within the last 14-day period.
Version | Codename | API Level | Distribution |
---|---|---|---|
1.5 | Cupcake | 3 | 0.2% |
1.6 | Donut | 4 | 0.5% |
2.1 | Eclair | 7 | 4.7% |
2.2 | Froyo | 8 | 17.3% |
2.3 – 2.3.2 | Gingerbread | 9 | 0.4% |
2.3.3 – 2.3.7 | 10 | 63.6% | |
3.1 | Honeycomb | 12 | 0.5% |
3.2 | 13 | 1.9% | |
4.0 – 4.0.2 | Ice Cream Sandwich | 14 | 0.2% |
4.0.3 – 4.0.4 | 15 | 10.7% |
The latest numbers show significant growth over last month when Android 4.0 stood at 7.1%. This is likely due to the growing number of devices now hitting the market with Ice Cream Sandwich preloaded (such as the HTC One devices and the Samsung Galaxy S III) as well as upgrades also becoming more common.
The most common version, Gingerbread, finally showed the first signs of slowing down. For the first time, its share dropped but only by 1% from about 65% down to 64%. Even the older Froyo (version 2.2) still has a higher share than Ice Cream Sandwich.
With Jelly Bean coming out next month on the Nexus 7 and as an upgrade for the Galaxy Nexus, Google Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom, it will be interesting to see if Android 4.x can keep up the momentum.
