WIND Mobile’s parent company, Globalive Communications Corp, is reportedly looking to buy Mobilicity. Citing “a person familiar with the discussions,” Bloomberg adds that the two companies are currently talking and could reach an agreement sometime in the first quarter of 2012.
WIND Mobile’s subscriber base (about 400,000 now) would more than double with the addition of the 250,000 Mobilicity customers such a deal would bring. The move would allow WIND to move closer to its goal of acquiring 1.5 million subscribers in its first three years of operation. Having just celebrated its second birthday, the carrier is still far from that goal having just topped 400,000 subscribers.
Another reason given for the merger is that the two companies use “compatible wireless frequencies.”
Another source revealed that Orascom, WIND Mobile’s Egyptian backer, considered a merger with Public Mobile in late 2010 as well. Those discussions stopped when Orascom turned its attention to a merger with VimpelCom.
