Sony yesterday announced its new Sony Next Generation Portable (NGP). One detail it did not reveal was that the NGP would come in both 3G and Wi-Fi-only versions. In fact, there will be multiple Wi-Fi-only versions and only one 3G, according to Sony Europe President Andrew House.
“The first thing to clarify, which I’m not sure the presentation did a perfect job of doing today, is that all of the devices will have Wi-Fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G,” House said.
“So the user gets a choice. Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that.”
Sony is still working out 3G partnerships. One confirmed detail is that it will have some sort of cost, presumably a monthly fee. More details will be available closer to launch.
