Vizio has confirmed that it will enter both the smartphone and tablet markets with the introduction of new mobile devices just ahead of CES 2011. Its new Via line of devices will initially consist of a mobile handset and a tablet. Much as it has done in the TV space, Vizio is aiming to offer both at affordable prices, targeting “your typical Wal-Mart shopper.”
The Vizio Via Phone will be powered by Google Android and come with a 4-inch display and both front-facing and rear-facing cameras. A carrier is already onboard but who it is will only be revealed closer to the launch. The Vizio Via Tablet, first glimpsed this weekend in a TV ad, will also be powered by Google Android. It will come with an 8-inch display, Wi-Fi connectivity, three speakers, and a front-facing camera.
Both devices will feature an interface similar to what Vizio already offers on its TV sets. They will also work as remote control devices for both Vizio and other consumer-electronics devices.
Both devices will be launched this summer. Pricing was not revealed.
Update: Vizio has also confirmed that both devices will come with 1GHz processor, GPS, 802.11 n Wi-Fi, microSD slots, both front and rear-facing cameras, and an HDMI port.
