Verizon Wireless has begun sending out press invitations for an event on February 11th in New York City. The invite is light on exactly what will be announced but The Wall Street Journal reports it will be none other than the Apple iPhone.
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” The Wall Street Journal reports that the Verizon version will be nearly identical to the current iPhone 4 except to support CDMA connectivity.
The announcement will end AT&T’s US iPhone monopoly which has been in place since the original iPhone was announced in June 2007. Some analysts expect that AT&T could see up to three million fewer new subscribers should it lose its exclusive.
It’s not clear yet when Verizon will begin to offer the Apple iPhone to customers but rumours have pointed to early 2011, suggesting it will not be long now.
