Toshiba today gave a preview of of its second Android tablet (its first was the poorly-received Folio 100) just ahead of CES 2011. Tentatively called the Toshiba Tablet, Toshiba confirmed a few details about it but only showed off a non-functional device.
The Toshiba Tablet will be powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Honeycomb (Android 2.4?). It will come with a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen display running at 1280 by 800, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 2MP front-facing camera, a 5MP rear-facing camera, full-size USB and HDMI ports, a mini-USB port and an SD card slot. It will lack 3G connectivity but it could be added in future models.
While design is not finalized, Toshiba expects that it will be about 1.3 centimeters (0.5-inch) thick and weigh less than 800 grams (1.7 pounds). The back will be rubberized and the battery (good for up to seven hours of video playback) will be removable.
Unlike the Folio, Toshiba will carry this tablet in the US (and hopefully in Canada). It is expected to be released in June at a price comparable to the Apple iPad.
It’s increasingly clear that many tablets will be introduced at CES but will not likely hit the street until around the second half of the year given that Google has yet to release Honeycomb. Apple cannot be displeased about this…
