TELUS resurrects Clearnet as budget carrier

Clearnet

TELUS has quietly resurrected the Clearnet brand as a discount carrier. Currently available only in British Columbia and Alberta, it offers unlimited talk and text plans (with a local outbound calling home phone service).

Clearnet currently offers three mobile phones: the LG GB-255G flip for CA$49.99, the Samsung Evergreen QWERTY candybar for CA$79.99 and the ‘coming soon’ Samsung Galaxy Apollo for CA$149.99. Two plans are offered: A provincial Unlimited Talk plan (CA$45 in BC and CA$55 in Alberta and an Unlimited Talk & Text Canada plan for CA$55 in BC and CA$60 in Alberta). Data plans are also coming soon.

TELUS’ move seems to follow in the footsteps of Bell and Rogers who unveiled discount brands (Solo Mobile and chatr wireless respectively) sometime ago. With news that new players are gaining increasing shares of new subscribers, the move is not surprising.

TELUS acquired Clearnet in 2000 in a deal worth CA$6.6 billion.
