ST-Ericsson announced today that it will be supplying Nokia with chipsets for future devices based on the Windows Phone platform.
“We are pleased to have been selected by Nokia as a key partner for Windows smartphones, in line with our goal to be present in all segments and major operating systems,” said Gilles Delfassy, president and CEO of ST-Ericsson. “Our NovaThor platforms continue to gain traction as they enable customers to bring great smartphones to the market.”
ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor platform uses dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processors.
Earlier this year, STMicroelectronics CEO Carlo Bozotti confirmed that ST-Ericsson would supply chipsets for Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 phones. He also revealed that ST-Ericsson is working with seven of the top nine handset manufacturers.
The move will end Qualcomm’s current monopoly on Windows Phone chipsets.
