Sony halts PSP Go production

Sony today confirmed that it has halted production of its PSP Go portable gaming device. Sony will sell off remaining stock and will continue to issue firmware patches and provide repair and warranty services.

The PSP Go began shipping in October 2009. Rather than using Sony’s UMD format, new games were downloaded directly onto the 16GB of built-in flash memory or Memory Stick. It was meant to take on devices such as the iPod touch but it did not meet with significant success.

Sony will now focus on the Sony PlayStation Portable and its upcoming NGP device.
