As part of its third quarter 2011 financial results announcement, Sony Ericsson reported that smartphones, namely its Android-based Xperia line, now account for more than 80 percent of total sales. It also announced that it has shipped 22 million Xperia smartphones to date. It will not come as a surprise that Sony Ericsson will focus more on smartphones going forward.
In fact, the company will shift its entire product portfolio over to smartphones. According to Bert Nordberg, President and CEO of Sony Ericsson, “We will continue to invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012.”
Recent rumours have also suggested that Sony is looking to buy Ericsson’s 50 percent stake in the joint venture. The move would allow Sony to more tightly integrate its smartphones products into its hardware, content and services portfolio (including PlayStation, movie and music catalogs).
