So much for that rumoured September launch. With the recent loss of its vice-president of wireless, Shaw Communications yesterday announced that it would delay the launch of its wireless network until early 2012. Shaw has seen some turmoil at its executive level recently: The departure last week of Laurence Cooke who headed up the wireless group was preceded by a change of CEO as Jim Shaw was replaced by his brother Brad Shaw last month.
In announcing its Q1 financial and operating results, new CEO Brad Shaw, said:
“We remain committed to wireless and are excited about the opportunity wireless represents for our Company going forward. With the rapid evolution of wireless technology and changing market conditions, we believe it is best to take a disciplined approach to our wireless rollout to ensure we deliver an exceptional customer experience. Accordingly, during 2011 we plan to invest approximately $150 – $200 million on this initiative and now expect to launch these services in our first major market early in calendar year 2012, approximately 3 months later than previously anticipated.”
Some analysts suggest that the delay could allow Shaw to launch with a 4G network rather than a 3G network and then have to upgrade. With some future competitors already conducting 4G field tests, the move could give Shaw an edge in attracting new customers.
