Samsung and its partner Nouvoyance will show off an ultra-high resolution LCD panel designed for tablets at next week’s SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium. The prototype will offer a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels (WQXGA), significantly higher than most current tablet displays which offer WSVGA (1024 x 800) resolution. With a pixel density of 300 pixels per inch, the display qualifies as a "Retina" display (essentially more than the human eye can discern).
"Samsung’s PenTile display technology is the only display technology that operates at 40 percent less power yet provides twice that of Full HD-viewing performance for consumers compared to legacy RGB stripe LCDs. There is no other commercial display technology on the market today that offers this high of a resolution and pixel density in a 10.1-inch size display," said Dr. Sungtae Shin, Senior VP of Samsung Electronics.
PenTile RGBW WQXGA Technology also offers 300 cd/m2 of luminance while drawing 40 percent less power. It also comes with an outdoor brightness mode offering up to 600 cd/m2 of luminance.
Samsung could have its first WQXGA panels ready for tablets as early as later this year (perhaps in time for an iPad 3 announcement?)
