Rogers Wireless confirms LTE deployment to begin in 2011

Rogers Communications Inc.

When Rogers announced last October that it had begun LTE field trials in Ottawa, it provided no details on its LTE deployment plans. That changed today when it announced that it will begin a multi-year LTE deployment this year.

For our customers, LTE will truly enable a world defined by data, providing a true broadband experience for HD video streaming, gaming, communications, transactions and other connected experiences through mobile Internet. LTE will drive Canadian innovation and fuel what Nadir Mohamed, our president and chief executive officer, calls the “Digital Fast Lane.”

Unfortunately, Rogers did not reveal any details on exactly when and where LTE will be available. We will also have to wait a bit longer to find out what devices will support the new network.

Rogers also confirmed that only its upcoming LTE network will be called 4G: “When Rogers says 4G, we mean LTE.” Could this be aimed at TELUS which just announced plans to market its HSPA+ network as a 4G one?
