Following in Bell’s footsteps, Rogers is set to launch a new mobile phone category of its own. Rather than going high-end as Bell did with the new ‘Superphone’ category, Rogers is looking to introduce a ‘Smartphone Lite’ category that will focus on devices “available at affordable prices with new low cost data plan options.”
According to a leaked internal document obtained by MobileSyrup.com, Rogers will launch the ‘Smartphone Lite’ category sometime in Q3 with the upcoming Nokia X7.
It will be interesting to see how Rogers markets this new product category. Will this be where free smartphones (with the obligatory three-year contract) come to slowly fade away? The suggestion that the Nokia X7 will start there seems to suggest otherwise.
