New details on updates coming to Windows Phone 7 in 2011

Microsoft Windows Phone

Paul Thurrott of SuperSite For Windows has revealed new details about upcoming updates for Windows Phone 7. His information gives credence to older rumours, suggesting that at least two updates are being planned.

The first Windows Phone 7 software update, codenamed “NoDo” (short for No Donuts apparently in likely reference to an older Android version), could be pushed to customers as early as February (pending carrier approvals). It includes the copy-and-paste functionality, support for the Qualcomm 7×30 chipset, a CDMA location stack, and a number of software fixes.

A major update is also planned. An older rumour suggested this update would be codenamed Mango but it now appears that this is but a portion of a bigger update. According to Thurrott, Mango includes Internet Explorer 9 with with the Trident 5 rendering engine, HTML 5 and Silverlight, and gesture support. It could also include other entertainment-focused functionality.

The major update with Mango may or may not immediately follow NoDo. There is a possibility that there could be other updates between the two.
