Engadget has landed new details about the upcoming Apple iPad 2 and iPhone 5. Citing “reliable sources,” the report reveals that we could see some rather significant architecture changes in these future models.
The iPad 2 will continue to come with a 10-inch display but will offer a new screen technology offering much higher resolution. It will also have both front and rear-facing cameras, and an SD slot. Engadget’s sources suggest that it will not have a traditional USB port as other rumours suggested (how about a microUSB port?).
More interesting is that the iPad 2 could come with a Qualcomm dual GSM/CDMA chipset. Apple is already using a Qualcomm chipset in its new CDMA iPhone 4. It now appears that this was not a one-off and that it will continue to transition from Infineon to Qualcomm chipsets for all of its future mobile devices.
The iPhone 5 will be completely redesigned (at least internally). Look for it to run Apple’s new multi-core A5 Cortex A9-based processor and a Qualcomm chipset offering CDMA/GSM/UMTS support. LTE connectivity does not appear to be in the cards for the iPhone 5 at this time.
The Apple A5 processor could also make its way into the iPad 2 and the next generation Apple TV, allowing it to run 1080p video “like running water.”
If all this is true, you certainly cannot accuse Apple of standing still…
