MWC 2011: Motorola has no plans to use Windows Phone 7

While Motorola left the door open on using Windows Phone 7 back in late 2010, recent executive comments suggest that the chance of doing so remains slim at best. “I don’t envision us using Microsoft. I would never say never but it’s not something we’re entertaining now,” said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services product management for Motorola, during a MWC press event.

Wyatt suggested that two key reasons drove Motorola’s decision. First, Motorola’s expectations in terms of timelines and feature set were not met. “There were a bunch of things that we believed about Microsoft that ended up not being true, mostly about what functionality it would have in what period of time,” explained Hyatt. Motorola also found Windows Phone 7’s closed platform prevented it from making changes that would allow it to differentiate its products from other Windows Phone devices.

Wyatt also indicated that Motorola has streamlined its upgrade process for future Android updates. It will use a standardized process using its Motoblur software to deliver future updates rather than using phone specific processes as it did in the past.
