Intel today announced that it will join forces with the Linux Foundation and LiMo Foundation to support a new Linux-based open source software platform for multiple device categories called Tizen.
The standards-based Tizen project will be hosted at the Linux Foundation and offer an operating system and a robust, flexible standards-based HTML5 and WAC web development environment within which device-independent apps can be produced. Tizen builds upon the strengths of both LiMo and MeeGo and Intel will be working with our MeeGo partners to help them transition to Tizen.
Tizen will support a number of device categories including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks, and in-vehicle infotainment devices. A technical steering team composed of Intel and Samsung will lead the development.
The first version of Tizen should be available in Q1 2012 with the first devices to use it expected to follow in mid-2012. Given Samsung’s involvement, will we see Samsung devices powered by Tizen?
What do you think Tizen’s chances are?
