Intel today announced its latest processor. Codenamed Oak Trail, the Atom Z670 processor is aimed at smaller devices such as tablets and smartphones. It promises “improved video playback, fast Internet browsing and longer battery life, without sacrificing performance.” It includes support for 1080p video decode, HDMI, and supports Adobe Flash.
Oak Trail processors will also generate less heat and use up less space than existing Atom processors. It also supports a number of mobile OS platforms including Google Android, MeeGo and Microsoft Windows.
Intel is facing increased competition as ARM-based processors from manufacturers such as Qualcomm Samsung, Texas Instruments have become widely used in smartphones and tablets.
A number of manufacturers, including Fujitsu, Lenovo, and Viliv will introduce devices using the Atom Z670 processor starting in May and throughout 2011.
