Imagination Technologies yesterday announced that it has licensed its PowerVR SGX MP multiprocessor graphics core to Samsung for use in mobile and consumer markets. The vague description suggests that Samsung could use the new GPU in everything from upcoming smartphones to tablets running the upcoming Windows 8.
Samsung has already used PowerVR GPUs in the past, including the original Samsung Galaxy S smartphone. It currently uses the ARM Mail-400 alongside its Exynos processor in the Galaxy S II and NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 in the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Could the announcement mark the return of PowerVR GPUs to future Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab devices?
