With the next major release of Google Android nearing release, you know that attention is already starting to turn to the next version. ThisIsMyNext has learned that “Jelly Bean” will follow in Ice Cream Sandwich‘s footsteps to continue Google’s tradition of naming releases after tasty treats. The version number is still unknown (not a surprise given that we don’t yet know Ice Cream’s number).
ThisIsMyNext‘s “trusted source” adds that much of the “game-changing stuff” originally planned for Ice Cream has been pushed out to Jelly Bean. What this would have been remains unclear though.
Ice Cream Sandwich, expected in October or November according to Eric Schmidt, will reunify Android into a single version after it was split to run on smartphones and tablets as different versions.
Update: A second “well-regarded” source has indicated that Google has not finalized the name for Ice Cream Sandwich’s successor. It’s not clear what other options Google could be considering. This second source has also added that, despite some features being pushed out to the next release, Ice Cream Sandwich will still be a significant update with major architectural, functional, and design changes.
