In an interview with PCMag, Alec Saunders, RIM’s vice president of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development, revealed that RIM’s first BBX smartphones will sport the same screen resolution and aspect ratio as the BlackBerry PlayBook. The devices will have displays with a 16:9 ratio display and a resolution of 1024 by 600. As Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis already suggested, their overall appearance will be very similar to that of the BlackBerry PlayBook.
The news aligns with earlier rumours that indicate that the BlackBerry Colt will sport a slab design like that of the BlackBerry Torch 9860 without physical keyboard or buttons on the front.
An additional comment about “multiple dimension graphics” (in the context of display sizes) suggests that future devices could have different screen sizes. This could mean that we will see Bold or Curve-like devices running BBX in the future.
Saunders also confirmed that BBX phones will offer the same features as the PlayBook (by then hopefully running BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0), including native email and BES support.
