While Microsoft has yet to confirm that future Windows Phone devices will support dual-core processors, it is only a matter of time (likely around the time of Mango’s release this fall). That has not stopped Qualcomm from adding Windows Phone to its list of supported mobile OS for its MSM8x60 chipset.
Offering dual Scorpion cores up to 1.5GHz and Adreno 220 GPUs, these chipsets are starting to appear in new and upcoming devices. For example, the upcoming HTC EVO 3D is set to use the MSM8260 while the rumoured HTC Pucinni tablet could come with the 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8660. The 1.2GHz dual-core APQ8060 meanwhile is set to power the HP TouchPad.
While Qualcomm’s blessing is no confirmation in itself, it is certainly a good indication of things to come.
