Bell this week introduced a new category of mobile phones. You will no longer find the HTC Sensation 4G and the Motorola ATRIX 4G (and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II) under ‘Smartphones’ but under ‘Superphones.’ MobileSyrup.com has learned what it takes for a smartphone to earn entry into the new category.
Three criteria must be met:
- a dual-core processor
- a display no smaller than 4-inches
- connectivity speeds of at least 14.4Mbps
Look for the Motorola XT860 to shortly join the new club…
While the criteria will likely change over time as technologies such as dual-core become more mainstream, the new category does give Bell a chance to distinguish its high-end devices from the ever growing number of smartphones now available. If it proves to be effective, we could see similar moves from Bell’s competitors soon.
