Whether it will be known as the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5 may still be up in the air but Apple has reportedly now placed an order for 15 million of its upcoming smartphone with Taiwan-based Pegatron. Shipments are set to begin in September and Pegatron has already started receiving components from suppliers.
The Digitimes report is the latest to indicate that the latest iPhone will not be a major update. According to its sources, the iPhone 5 “does not seem to have any major update from iPhone 4.” This suggests that most of the improvements will be under the hood: A faster processor, a better camera, and perhaps a bigger display, an aluminium back, and HSPA+ support.
Digitimes also reports that Pegatron shipped about 4 million CDMA-based iPhone 4s in the first quarter of 2011. It had expected orders closer to 10 million, leaving its assembly lines running at less than 50 percent capacity.
