While Apple has yet to disclose sales figures for the first weekend of iPad 2 sales, analysts have come up with their own estimates. The numbers range quite a bit.
Piper Jaffray estimated that Apple would sell between 400,000 and 500,000 units over the weekend. Global Equities Research expects sales to fall closer to 900,000 (about three times as much as the original iPad sold on its opening weekend). Wedbush Securities analysts also estimated stronger numbers, saying that they would “not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to 1 million iPad2s [sic] in the opening weekend.”
As with widely divergent estimates, analysts also have different takes on who bought those iPad 2s. For example, Global Equities found that 60 percent of buyers were existing iPad owners and that 100 percent owned at least one Apple product. On the other hand, Piper Jaffray found that 70 percent of buyers were buying their first one.
Hopefully, Apple can soon settle this one way or another with some official numbers…
