Amazon launches ad-driven Kindle

Amazon Kindle 3G

Amazon is once again lowering the cost of the regular Kindle but the new price comes with a catch: On-screen ads. The new Kindle with Special Offers will sell for US$114, US$25 less than the Kindle.

“We’re working hard to make sure that anyone who wants a Kindle can afford one,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “Kindle with Special Offers is the same #1 bestselling Kindle – and it’s only $114. Kindle is the best deal in consumer electronics anywhere in the world.”

The Kindle with Special Offers will display special offers on the bottom of the home screen and sponsored screensavers. Special offers that will be displayed in the first few weeks include:

  • US$10 for US$20 Amazon.com Gift Card
  • US$1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 Store (choose from over 1 million albums)
  • Buy one of 30 Kindle bestsellers with your Visa card and get $10 Amazon.com credit

Amazon also unveiled the ‘AdMash’ Kindle app and website that will let customers choose what advertisements will become Kindle sponsored screensavers.

Amazon confirmed that there not be any ads in the Kindle books themselves. Maybe Amazon is saving that for a future Kindle with a still cheaper price…
