Sony today announced its next generation portable entertainment system (codename: Next Generation Portable or NGP), the successor to the PlayStation Portable. The new device promises to combine gaming and social connectivity.
Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of PlayStation’s DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with friends wherever they are. Within the device are a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation ultimate portable entertainment experience.
The NGP will come with a 5-inch OLED touchscreen display (960 by 544-pixel), an ARM Cortex A9 processor with a SGX543MP4+ GPU, two analog controllers, a multi-touch pad on the rear, integrated 3G connectivity, GPS, Wi-Fi, front- and rear-facing cameras, and a Flash-based memory card.
The Sony NGP will be available by the end of the year. Pricing was not revealed.
Sony also unveiled “PlayStation Suite” (PS Suite), a cross-platform gaming platform that will bring first-generation PlayStation games to Android devices (Android 2.3 or higher required). It will also include a game store and a new development platform.
