Digitimes sources are reporting that Microsoft will announce Windows Mobile 6.6 (codenamed Maldives) in February. I suspect that such an announcement would take place at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in mid-February.
It’s not clear though if Windows Mobile 6.6 is just a renumbered Windows Mobile 6.5.3 version or a completely separate release. Digitimes provides little information about this version except to indicate that it will add support for capacitive displays (also expected in 6.5.3?). Perhaps 6.5.3 will be offered as an upgrade to current 6.5 devices with 6.6 landing on devices with capacitive displays.
Digitimes sources also suggest that Windows Mobile 7 could well be delayed to 2011. Such rumours already surfaced earlier this week.
