What to expect in Google Android 2.2

Google Android

A number of web sites reported this week that Google Android 2.2 (codename Froyo) was showing up in their traffic logs, suggesting that testing for the upcoming release is now underway (No such signs here at Gadgetorama). Could a release be far behind?

While Google has yet to announce release plans and the full list of new features, rumours have begun to paint a picture of what is coming in Android 2.2. Among the expected enhancements are:

  • JIT compiler
  • More free RAM thanks to updated kernel
  • OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements
  • Flash 10.1 support (but not necessarily Flash 10.1 itself)
  • Activation of Color Trackball (a feature originally scheduled for Android 2.1)
  • Enable FM radio
  • Automatic application updating (possibly with a by-application toggle)
  • Addition of 802.11 n Wi-Fi for Google Nexus One

As for a release date, the current suggestion is that it could happen on the first day of Google I/O (May 19th).

Unfortunately, with the new release will come another round of ‘what device will get the upgrade and when?’.
