According to AdMob, the Verizon DROID by Motorola is the most popular Android device based on market share for May 2010 (based on 12.7 million Android phones in the AdMob network). It holds first place with a 21 percent market share, followed by the HTC Hero with 16 percent, the HTC Magic (10 percent), the HTC Dream (9 percent) and the HTC Droid Eris (8 percent).
At the manufacturer level, things are a bit different. HTC owns 53 percent of the market share followed by Motorola with 30 percent. Samsung is in third with 9 percent.
The Verizon DROID was released back in November 2009. It benefited from a high profile campaign to support its launch. Other high profile devices did not fare as well. For example, the Google Nexus One barely managed to eke out a 2 percent market share.
It’s likely that things will change quickly with the recent or upcoming release of devices such as the HTC Desire, the HTC EVO 4G, the DROID X and the still-unannounced DROID 2 among others.
