According to WMExperts.com, Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Mobile 7 will in fact consist of two different versions. Rebranded as ‘Seven’, it will come in Business and Media editions. The two are following different development timelines and the Business edition is apparently further advanced.
Windows Phone Seven Business Edition will be more stripped down than its Media counterpart. It will likely be the version used by manufacturers who will add their own user interface. It will also come with the ability to sync with other devices via “the cloud.” For example, it will allow remote access to documents or let two people view and edit the same document dynamically using different devices. Minimum resolution could be as high as WVGA (800 by 480 pixels).
Windows Phone Seven Media Edition will be consumer focused and offer a much richer interface. It promises to support Silverlight, Mediaroom, Xbox Live, Zune Music integration and interfaces for Facebook and Twitter. This version could come out later than Business Edition and could be released as late as 2011.
Both versions of Windows phone Seven could also come with “Orion,” a cloud-based assisted GPS system. It promises much improved initial location-lock performance thanks to support for multiple-tower signal detection, trilateration, and IP resolving.
All this suggests that Microsoft will be in a position to at least reveal some details about Windows Phone Seven at the upcoming MWC in February.
