Twitter confirms plans for official Android application

Only days after its Tweetie acquisition, Evan Williams , Twitter’s co-Founder and CEO, confirmed plans for an official Twitter client for Google Android. The announcement was made during Chirp, Twitter’s first official developer conference.

Evan confirmed that Twitter will use the same strategy as its new Twitter for iPhone client. Namely, its official Android client will compete against similar third-party (like Seesmic, Twidroid and HTC’s Peep).

What is not so clear for now is whether Twitter plans to acquire an existing third party application or if it will partner with a developer to come up with a new client (as it did with BlackBerry).

It’s also unclear when Twitter plans to release this new client.
