The Boy Genius is reporting that RIM’s rumoured BlackPad tablet is not exactly what we had expected. Rather than a full-blown tablet device as initially thought, it looks like RIM is instead working on a “companion" device. It would share more with the ill-fated Palm Foleo or the Celio RedFly than with Apple’s iPad.
BGR reports that the device will have an 8.9-inch display and come with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi but will not have cellular connectivity. The idea behind the device would be to offer a larger display for multimedia applications (e-books, web browsing, photo viewing, etc).
Contrary to recent rumours, RIM is hoping to release this tablet device by December or even sooner if it can.
RIM employees have also privately expressed frustration to BGR about the direction of this project.
