Qualcomm expects to begin shipments of its 1.5GHz dual-core QSD8672 chip before the end of the year. More interesting is Mark Frankel’s, vice president of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, comment that devices sporting the new chipset could be on the market as early as Christmas. Among the devices where it could end up are smartphones, tablets and low-cost laptops, according to Frankel.
The 8672 chipset promises better power management and performance, WSXGA (1440 by 900) display support, 1080p video playback, integrated HDMI, and DDR2 and DDR3 memory interfaces. Each core will also be clocked independently, allowing one to run at full speed while the other is idle.
Qualcomm first teased us earlier this summer with promises of such speeds as it began to ship its dual-core 1.2GHz MSM8660 Snapdragon chipsets. It might have started shipping sooner had Qualcomm not run into unspecified delays.
