Qualcomm today announced that it has begun to ship the third generation of its Snapdragon chipset. For the first time, the Snapdragon chipset comes with dual processors. Consisting of MSM8260 for HSPA+ connectivity and the MSM8660 for multi-mode HSPA+/CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. B connectivity, speeds will top out at 1.2GHz.
Both chipsets come with a GPU for 3D/2D acceleration engines, OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 acceleration, 1080p video encoding and decoding, integrated GPS, a dedicated audio engine, and support for displays offering resolution up to 24-bit WXGA (1280 by 800).
The even faster QSD8672 chipset, topping out at 1.5GHz, does not have a shipping date yet.
There is no word on which Qualcomm customers have received the new Snapdragon chipsets. Hopefully mobile device announcements are not too far away…
