MWC 2010: Adobe AIR to go mobile

During MWC 2010, Adobe announced plans to bring Adobe AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime), its consistent runtime for standalone applications, to mobile devices, starting with Google Android in 2010. AIR will provide:

developers with a feature-rich environment for delivering rich applications outside the mobile browser and across multiple operating systems via mobile marketplaces and app stores. AIR leverages mobile specific features from Flash Player 10.1, is optimized for high performance on mobile screens and designed to take advantage of native device capabilities for a richer and more immersive user experience.

AIR is already used to develop desktop applications (such as Tweetdeck). Mobile AIR applications will be available from the Android Market like regular applications and provide a similar interaction with the mobile device’s hardware (e.g., sensors) and data (e.g., photos).

Adobe also released a beta version of Flash Player 10.1 today with the intention of releasing the final version sometime in the first half of 2010. It will eventually be available for Google Android, the BlackBerry platform, Symbian OS, Palm webOS and Windows Mobile.

Now, if only Adobe and Apple could settle their differences…
