A year ago, would anyone have predicted that Motorola could become the top Android phone vendor in 2010? Now, Digitimes Research suggests that this could well happen. Digitimes predicts that Motorola’s focus on Android could result in it shipping up to 15.6 million devices in 2010. It also predicts that total Android phone sales will hit up to 36 million units.
Motorola recently announced plans to release up to 30 smartphones this year and most if not all will use Google Android.
HTC, the dominant Android device manufacturer in 2009, is expected to see its market share drop from 64.5 percent to 31.9 percent as it continues to offer both Android and Windows Mobile smartphones and begins to offer devices running the BREW MP operating system (like the just-announced HTC Smart).
Other players, such as Samsung, may have something to say about this though. Needless to say, Google Android will continue to be a disruptive force in the smartphone market this year.
