Microsoft could still present WM7 at MWC

Microsoft Windows Phone

Exactly what Microsoft will or will not announce at next month’s MWC remains a mystery. Rumours of a Windows Mobile 6.6 announcement surfaced yesterday but it now appears that the company could still make some sort of Windows Mobile 7 announcement.

According to “a person familiar with the matter,” a final decision has yet to be made. Perhaps there will be a very high level announcement about Windows Mobile 7 at MWC with more information to follow in March at the MIX 2010 conference.

The stakes are high for Microsoft. Windows Mobile has not kept up with advances made by rival operating systems such as the Apple iPhone OS, the BlackBerry OS, and Google Android. Consequently, device manufacturers are increasingly turning their attention to these alternatives. Hopefully, Windows Mobile 7 will “set the bar forward” as promised by Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division President Robbie Bach during CES 2010.
