Not only is HTC rumoured to be considering buying Palm but its CFO, Cheng Hui-ming, revealed that the company is also thinking about developing its own mobile operating system. The move would help it reduce its dependence on outside developers, namely Google, Microsoft and Qualcomm, the companies behind the mobile operating systems it currently offers on its devices.
It’s clear that HTC is being influenced by the success of Apple and Research In Motion with their proprietary operating systems. But whether the company moves forward remains to be seen.
“There are many multiple factors to be considered together, rather than a simple statement as to own or not to own proprietary software,” Cheng said.
