Google CEO shows off Gingerbread on unannounced device

Google CEO Eric Schmidt showed off an unannounced smartphone running Android Gingerbread today at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Fransisco. The device is widely thought to be the Google Nexus S which surfaced in a number of rumours last week.

One interesting detail revealed by Schmidt is that the mysterious device will support near-field communications (NFC). Schmidt also indicated that Google is looking at a number of different uses for NFC, including searching. He also suggested that NFC could eventually replace credit cards.

Schmidt said that Gingerbread will be “in the next few weeks” but gave no specific details.
