According to market research firm Gartner, 1.211 billion mobile phones were sold in 2009, a 0.9 percent decrease over 2008. Performance in the last quarter of 2009 was a marked improvement and likely salvaged the year. In Q4, mobile phone sales reached 340 million, an 8.3 percent increase over the same quarter a year earlier.

The picture was rosier when looking at smartphones only where sales reached 172.4 million units, a 23.8 percent improvement over 2008. Again, Q4 was particularly good with shipments rising an impressive 41.1 percent over Q4 2008 to 53.8 million units.
